Itinerary 
Expect more than 300+ species of birds 


Day 1: Arrive at Bale International Airport (Addis Ababa) where you will be met by Passion Ethiopia Tours representative and transfer to hotel. O/N – Hotel

Day 2: Drive from Addis Ababa to Lake Langano and Abijata we will visit Flamingo and Pelican breeding and roosting grounds. It is also excellent for viewing migratory waders from Europe and Asia. A rocky cliff thicket attracts Little and Blue Rock Thrush, Abyssinian Black-wheatear, Long-billed Pipit, Slate-colored Boubou, Blue-spotted Wood-dove and Mocking Cliff-chat. Scrub lures Singing Cisticola, African Red-billed Firefinch and Red-cheeked Cordonbleu.
Detour at Debrezeit for Chalalaka an important seasonal shallow lake for waders and significant numbers of Cranes and Marabou storks. At Lake Hora we can spot Malachite Kingfisher, Paradise Flycatcher, Pied Kingfisher, Black-billed Barbet, Little Bee-eater, Grey-headed Woodpecker, African Paradise Flycatcher, Tacazze Sunbird, Pelican and Great Cormorant.

Day 3: Early in the morning we walk into acacia woodland looking for Black-winged Tit, Blue-napped Mousebird, Black-winged Lovebird, Cardinal Woodpecker and Red-Fronted Barbet.
After breakfast we drive to Arbaminch via Shashamane and Wolayita Sodo, stopping at Hamasa Waterfalls for birding and photo opportunity.

Day 4: In the morning we drive through lower ‘Arbaminh’ meaning ‘Forty Springs’ savannah forest and the land barrier of Lake Chamo and Abaya also called the 'BRIDGE OF GOD'. Interesting wild animals include the endemic Swaynes Hartebeest, Burchell’s Zebras, Lesser and Greater Kudus, Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelles and number of birds such as Secretarybird, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill and Hartlaub’s Bustard can be seen. In the afternoon we take a boat trip to Lake Chamo's Crocodile market, where large numbers of crocodile (some up to 6 meters long) gather to sunbath and then on to the Hippopotamus pool.

Day 5: We drive towards Lake Awassa, important for shorebirds and acacia woodland dwellers. On the way we detour to Chencha Highlands where the Dorze people villages are known for their traditional weaving and bamboo made house style. We then proceed to our destination for the night, the town of Awassa. On arrival we search the grounds for Spotted Creeper, Blue-headed Coucal, Dusky Flycatcher, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Grey-headed Batis, Ruppell’s Starling and numbers of Marabous and Pelicans roosting in the flat canopy.

Day 6: We walk around Lake Awassa shoreline looking for African Pygmy Goose, Hottentot Teal, Black Crake, African Fish-eagle, Hadeda Ibis, Purple Heron, Green Shank, Common Sandpiper, Great White Pelican, White-backed Duck, Sedge Warbler, Common Waxbill and to the traditional fish market, were many birds feed on fish left-over. Later we drive to ‘Wendogenet’ meaning ‘the small paradise’ with birding en route. On arrival we search the grounds for Bruce’s Green Pigeon, Mountain Thrush, Silvery-Cheeked Hornbill, Slender-billed Starling, Abyssinian Woodpecker, Hooded and White-backed Vulture.

Day 7: Pre-breakfast walk along the hot spring for Yellow Fronted Parrot, Half-collared Kingfisher, Mountain Wagtail, Double-toothed Barbet, White-cheeked Turaco, Narina Trogon, Grey Cuckoo Shrike, Red-shouldered Cuckoo Shrike, Hill Babbler, Tambourine Dove, African Harrierhawk, Steppe Buzzard, Great Sparrowhawk and Crowned Eagle.
After late breakfast we proceed to ‘Bishangari’ meaning “holy water” located on the eastern bank of Lake Langano adjacent to the Chilalo chain of mountain highland on the southern edge of thr Great Rift Valley's tropical rain forest. En route we search the secondary forest for Nubian Woodpecker, Speckled Mousebird, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, African Mourning Dove, Black-billed Wood-dove and many more colorful forest birds.

Day 8: Full day birding in the fabulous Broad-leafed Savannah forest where we expect Broad-billed Roller, Greater and Scaly Honey Guides, Emerald Cuckoo, Abyssinian Wattle-eye, Scaly Francolin, White Cheeked Turaco, Grey Kestrel, Tropical Boubou, Red-eyed Dove and many forest dwelling birds. The forest also exhibits mammals like the beautiful Black and White Colobus Monkey, Olive Baboon, Bush Duiker, Giant Tree Squirrel and more.

Day 9: Drive back to Addis Ababa with birding on the way and detour to the Lake Ziway wetland looking for Giant Kingfisher, Black Heron, Godwits and many fresh water birds. Arriving in Addis Ababa late afternoon we have farewell dinner before transferring to Bole International Airport.

Day 2: An early start we drive to the Sululta Plain with its short grass and wetland habitat looking for unique birds including Blue-winged Goose, Wattled Ibis, Ethiopian Black-headed Siskin, Ethiopian Cisticola, White-collared Pigeon, Three-banded Plover and Yellow-billed Duck. Debrelibanos Monastery escarpment is adjacent to woodland and thicket holding Banded Barbet, White-cheeked Turaco, Grey-headed Woodpecker and Ethiopian Black-headed Oriole. Birds of prey including Lammergeyer, Vareaux's Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Thick-billed and Fan-Tailed Raven.

Day 3: After an early breakfast we explore the nearby gorge that attracts White-billed Starling, Ruppell's Black Chat, Abyssinian Black Wheatear, White-winged Cliff-chat and Mocking Cliff-chat. Scrub lures Erckel's Francolin, Stout Cisticolas and Sunbirds. Driving to Debrezeit with its crater lakes like Chalalaka an important seasonal shallow lake for waders and significant numbers of Cranes and Marabou storks. At Lake Hora we can spot Malachite Kingfisher, African Paradise Flycatcher, Little Grebe, Great Egret and African Great Cormorants.

Day 4: Awash Park with its acacia thicket and savannah grassland has a variety of bird species including Grey Hornbill, Somali Fiscal and Helmeted Guineafowl, Blue-napped Mousebird, Kori Bustard, Yellow-necked Francolin, Drongo, Chestnut-breasted Sandgrouse and birds of prey such as Tawny Eagle, Long-crested Eagle, Swallow-tailed Kite and Chanting Goshawk.
Awash park is home to larger mammals including Beisa Oryx, Lesser Kudu, Hammadryas and Olive Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Salt’s Dick-dick and Spotted Hyena.

Day 5: Today we travel the Kudu loop track running through acacia trees and pass isolated villages. Typical birds of the area include Red-bellied Parrot, Gillett’s Lark, Ashy Cisticola and Somali Fiscal. Mt. Fentale dominates the landscape, a semi-dormant volcano resulting in a habitat of lava flows and deep fissures. Interesting birds in this unique habitat include Sombre Rock-chat, Blackstart, Yellow-throated Serin and White-headed Buffalo Weaver. Later in the day, we travel through the Sabober Plains where we find Black-headed Lapwing, Superb Starling, Cyprus and Pied Wheatear. At dusk we may find the local Star-spotted Nightjar and Woodland Owl.
We spend tonight again at Genet Hotel.

 
Day 6: Today we drive to the Sodore Spa revisiting the remaining part of the Park plus the famous Awash River Waterfalls. Stop at Lake Basaka for migrant waders including Saddle-billed Stork, Spoonbill, Stints, Plovers and Shanks. The river Awash flow by the hotel with old fig and acacia trees covering its banks. Open areas have Claperton's Francolin, Pygmy Kingfisher, Black-crowned Tchagra, Black-winged Lovebird, Eastern Grey Plantain-eater, Black Saw-wing, Village Weaver, Shining Sunbird and Pygmy Kingfisher.

Day 7: Passing through farmland used for cereal production and livestock grazing our destination is the town of Goba in the highlands of Bale Mountains. The northern part of Bale Mountains Park is important for Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Bohor Reedbuck, Grey Duiker and Warthog. Birds of prey can be numerous including Eastern Imperial Eagle, Lanner Falcon, Kestrels and Golden Eagle. Grass verge attracts White-collared Pigeon, Dwarf Raven, Erlanger’s Lark, Botta’s Wheatear and Alpine Chat.

Day 8: Beyond Goba is an extensive stand of Juniper and Hagenia Abyssinica forest, home to Abyssinian Slaty-flycatcher, Woodland Warbler, Olive Pigeon. Among birds of prey Steppe Eagle, Augur Buzzard, Vareaux’s Eagle and Peregrine Falcon occupy upper rocky escarpments. Sanate plateau crater lakes itself attracts the remnant population of Wattled Crane and Ruddy Shelduck. The objective of today is to find and study the rare endemic Ethiopian Wolf hunting for Giant Mole rat.

Day 9: Lake Awassa is significant for birds including African Pygmy Goose, White-backed Duck, Long-tailed Cormorant, Black Crakes, African Jacana, Sedge Warblers and Common Waxbill. On arrival we look for Spotted Creeper, Cordon Bleu, African Thrush, Ruppell’s Robin-chat and African Paradise Flycatcher flipping in the canopy of acacia trees.

Day 3: Driving through the middle section of The Great Rift Valley we encounter savannah grassland and thicket holding a variety of bird life and mammals. We will stop at Lake Basaka a saline water lake for waders and shorebirds such as African Spoonbill, Saddle-Billed Stork, Spur-winged Lapwing, Little Ringed Plovers, Themminck’s Stint and Black-winged Stilt.

Day 4: Early breakfast and outing to explore acacia thickets and savannah plain for Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Kori Bustard, Gillett’s Lark and birds of prey including Scissor-tailed Kite, Secretarybird, Steppe Eagle and Pallid Harrier. Oryx Beisa, Soemmering’s Gazelle, Lesser Kudu, Warthog and Dick-Dicks are mammals we can expect. In the afternoon we drive to the Awash River Waterfalls with woodland and thicket supporting Woodland Kingfisher, Black-billed Barbet and Nubian Woodpecker and many more.

Day 7: Today, we drive through the moist tropical forest in the southern part of the park, known as Harenna Forest, towards the remote town of Nehgele via the Genale River basin. The woodland and thickets adjacent to it holds the spectacular African White-winged Dove, Juba Weaver, Somali Bunting, Pringle's Puffback and Pygmy Batis. Flowering shrubs attracts Hunter’s and Marico Sunbird.

Day 8: At dawn we drive to Harakelo and Wadera seasonal river valley to explore rare and striking birds like Ruspoli’s Turaco and Golden-breasted Starling. In the afternoon we visit the vast grassland of Liben Plain, looking for appealing birds of dry-open country. To mention few; the endemic Sidamo Lark, Tiny Cisticola, Themink’s Courser, Rufous Short-Toed Lark and Crowned Lapwing.

Day 9: Birding en route we drive to the town of Yabello. It is an important junction town in the middle of red sandstone landscape with many large termite mounds. This mosaic arid land is home to several spectacular birds notably the charismatic Stresemann's Bush-Crow, White-tailed Swallow, Golden-breasted Starling, Vulturine Guineafowl and White-crowned Starlings.

Day 10: Today we explore the road to Mega and Dubluk were mixed vegetation thicket attracts Pygmy Falcon, Slate-colored Boubou, Bare-eyed Thrush, Purple Grenadier, Black-capped and Grey-capped Social Weaver. Birds of prey are numerous including Eastern Chanting Goshawk, Gabar Goshawk, Amur Falcon and White-headed Vultures. In the afternoon we will bird Yabello Forest Sanctuary looking for Northern Black Flycatcher, White-cheeked Turaco, Tawny Wagtail and Bare-faced Go-Away-Bird.

Day 11: Birding en route we drive to Lake Awassa important for water and shorebirds including Geese, Ducks, Crakes, Jacanas, Warblers and Finches. On arrival we search for Spotted Creeper, Blue-headed Coucal, Dusky Flycatcher, Fiscal and numbers of Marabou Storks and White Pelicans.

Day 12: Early morning walk along the bank of Lake Awassa looking for African Pygmy Goose, Black Crake, Greater Egret, Pelicans and Warblers. Then exploring the traditional fish market, where birds of prey feed on fish-slaughters left-over. After breakfast we drive to Wendogenet Spa meaning “the small paradise” with birding en route. On arrival we search the grounds for Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Variable Sunbird and Abyssinian Woodpecker.

A steep escarpment attracts Abyssinian Wheatear, Little Rock Thrush and Mocking Cliff-Chat. Scrub lures Singing Cisticols, Chatterers and Masked Weavers. Driving back to Addis Ababa we bird on the way and detour to the Lake Ziway wetland looking for Giant Kingfisher, Black Heron, Godwits and many fresh water birds. Arriving in Addis Ababa late afternoon we have farewell dinner before transferring to Bole International Airport.

Day 3: Today we drive to Jemma Valley to locate the rare Harwood's Francolin and Abyssinian Black Wheatear. The road climbs steeply through highland fields and traditional villages. The cliffs and boulder-strewn slopes of the Jemma Valley may have flocks of White-billed Starlings, the extremely rare Salvadori's Serin, Singing Cisticola, Isabelline Shrike and Abyssinian Black Wheatear. In the afternoon, we drive to Debrebirhan Town while enjoying another sector of plain grassland birds including Erlanger's Lark, Pectoral-patch Cisticola and Ortolan Bunting.

Day 4: An early start to explore the road to Tarmaber scenic view outlook. Our main interest is to find the extremely rarest endemic Ankober Serin feeding in the Northern Shoa highland tussock grass field. In the lower fields, we can expect Yellow-crowned Canary, Brown-rumped and Streaky Seed-eater. Overhead we may locate Saker Falcon, Lammergeyer, Augur Buzzard and Alpine Swifts. We then continue driving to the Crater Lakes around Debrezeit. Chalalaka is an important seasonal lake for waders and significant numbers of Cranes and Marabou storks. Lake Hora is where you can spot Malachite Kingfisher, Paradise Flycatcher and Cormorants. Lake Ziway also contains birds such as Giant Kingfisher, Black Heron, Godwits and African Fish Eagle.

Day 10: Sof Omar Caves on the eastern edge of Bale Mountains maybe the world’s most spectacular and extensive underground system carved by the Web River into the limestone that line it. Time has carved out ornate and immense pillars, domes and chambers, and the river flows through the caves year-round. During one’s passage through the caves, we have to cross the river seven times in the 1.5km underground caves. It is an interesting shrine and pilgrimage place for Muslims. Even people who suffer from claustrophobia will enjoy the caves. The roof of the caves is home to thousands of Bats and the floor is covered with droppings accumulating over many years. Web river gorge and cliffs with its bushes support the endemic Salvadori’s Seedeater, Bristle-crowned Starling, Swifts and Swallows.

Day 11:Today we drive through Ethiopia’s moist tropical vegetation in the southern part of the park, covered with clouds most of the year, and known as Harenna Forest. Arriving in the remote town of Nehgele via the Genale River basin, the woodland and thickets adjacent to it holds the spectacular African White-winged Dove, Juba Weaver, Somali Bunting, Pringle's Puffback and Pygmy Batis. Flowering shrubs attracts Hunter’s and Marico Sunbird.

Day 12: At dawn we drive to Harakelo and Wadera seasonal river valley to explore rare and striking birds like Ruspoli’s Turaco and Golden-breasted Starling. In the afternoon we visit the vast grassland of Liben Plain, looking for birds of dry-open country. To mention few; the endemic Sidamo Lark, Tiny Cisticola, Themink’s Courser, Rufous Short-Toed Lark and Crowned Lapwing.

Day 13: Birding en route we drive to the town of Yabello. It is an important junction town in the middle of red sandstone landscape with many large termite mounds. This mosaic arid land is home to several spectacular birds notably the charismatic Stresemann's Bush-Crow, White-tailed Swallow, Golden-breasted Starling, Vulturine Guineafowl and White-crowned Starlings.

Day 14: Today we explore the road to Mega and Dubluk were mixed vegetation thickets attracts Pygmy Falcon, Slate-colored Boubou, Bare-eyed Thrush, Purple Grenadier, Black-capped and Grey-capped Social Weaver. Birds of prey are numerous including Eastern Chanting Goshawk, Cabar Goshawk, Amur Falcon and White-headed Vultures. In the afternoon we will bird Yabello Forest Sanctuary looking for Northern Black Flycatcher, White-cheeked Turaco, Tawny Wagtail and Bare-faced Go-Away-Bird.

Day 15: Birding en route we drive to Lake Awassa important to water and shorebirds including Geese, Ducks, Crakes, Jacanas, Warblers and Finches. On arrival we search for Spotted Creeper, Blue-headed Coucal, Dusky Flycatcher, Fiscal and numbers of Marabou Storks and White Pelicans.

Day 16: Early morning walk along the bank of Lake Awassa looking for African Pygmy Goose, Black Crake, Greater Egret, Pelicans and Warblers. Then exploring the traditional fish market, where birds of prey feed on fish-slaughters left-over. After breakfast we drive to Wendogenet Spa with birding en route. On arrival we search the grounds for Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Variable Sunbird and Abyssinian Woodpecker.

 Day 17: Before breakfast we walk along the springs and hillside to search for Half-Collared Kingfisher, Yellow Fronted Parrot, Mountain Wagtail, Double-toothed Barbet, Narinna Trogon, Black Saw-wing and birds of prey including African Harrier Hawk, Steppe Buzzard and Crowned Eagle. In the afternoon we drive to Lake Langano and Abijata's breeding and roosting grounds for Pelicans and Flamingos. It is also excellent for migratory waders from Europe and Asia.

Day 18: Early in the morning walk along the bank of Lake Langano to search birds including Black-Winged Lovebird, Orange-bellied Parrot, Speckled Mousebird, Crombec, Masked Weavers and Cardinal Woodpecker. A steep escarpment attracts Abyssinian Wheatear, Little Rock Thrush and Mocking Cliff-Chat. Scrub lure Singing Cisticola, Chatterers and Masked Weavers. Driving back to Addis Ababa we bird on the way and detour to the Lake Ziway wetland looking for Giant Kingfisher, Black Heron, Godwits and many fresh water birds. Arriving in Addis Ababa late afternoon we have farewell dinner before transferring to Bole International Airport.

The above birding itineraries are based on what are essentially popular routes for birders. It can be shortened or extended.

Fitness: 
The tour does not require a high level of fitness but participants should be in good general health. Should you have any physical limitations please contact us. Please note we will be traveling in high altitudes (above 4000m) part of the tour.
